A strong heart and love of God were the key ingredients Mavis Cynthia Wood needed in order to become Barbados’ newest centenarian.
Surrounded by families and friends in her Princess Royal Avenue, the Pine, home on Saturday, Wood was showered with gifts and praises in celebration of her impressive milestone.

Her daughter, Evon Wood, said that her mother continues to be an inspiration to her and the family, and that though she has reached 100 years of age, her spirit and heart are still very much strong.

“I am not surprised, I knew it would come. Her doctor told us to come and go get a heart test; [we] went to the hospital and when I took her in to get the heart test, the male doctor told me, ‘Come here I got something to tell you’. He told me, ‘Your mother will live to see 100, your mother’s heart is good.'”

“So, all along, we knew that she would have made it.”

Wood also added that it was her mother’s faith in God that has kept her going all throughout the years, and despite the difficulties she is experiencing at her age now with mobility issues, she always asked God to let her reach 100.

“She doesn’t like to see nobody unfair [anyone] … if she got the last bread and you say you’re hungry, you can have the whole bread. She would go get a cup of tea and she is just as good with that.

“That is something that she told us to keep on with; if anyone comes and says they are hungry, and if it’s the only bread or only biscuit [you have], make sure you give them because God will prepare for you.”

Mavis Cynthia Wood’s cousin of centenarian, Gale Hippolite, paid tribute to Wood, and said that her commitment to her family and community over the years, continues to be an impressive statement on the integrity of her character.

“The world has changed significantly over her lifetime, yet some things remain constant, our family bonds remain strong… Mavis’ love for family, community, and love of country remain strong. Even as she has come this far to reach her 100th year, [we pray] that God will continue to bless her with strength and good health to enjoy many more birthdays.” (SB)
