The just concluded Zeemoney road tennis competition was a hit in many ways.
This youth tournament came at the right time after the seniors had their competitions earlier. It was a good idea to play the youth competition by itself as the focus was only on these young upcoming stars of the future.
The organizing committee must be highly commended in putting together this competition in only two weeks bearing in mind the finish date was on Independence Day.
Despite rainy conditions the organizers ensured that the courts were well covered and the venues have a professional appearance with all kinds of advertising boards and banners.
The venues were also a hit especially at Dover hard courts many tourists observed the games for the first time .At Belfield which is probably the top road tennis venue with its community infrastructure, the fans came out in their numbers.
The final at the Gymnasium courts presented a family environment with entertainment and some highly competitive tennis. The sponsors Zeemoney should be happy as their brand is slowly becoming a household brand.
The National Sports Council must be complemented for marking courts in every parish giving the opportunity for our young ones to get involved in a healthy activity.
It was a good move on the organizers to involve the recruits of the Barbados Youth Advance Corps to participate.
With the prevailing violence treating our communities competitions and programs of this nature are most welcomed. The intention of grooming the most talented from this competition into a training program is an excellent idea.
With the National Sports Council already with its development programs in place our indigenous sport of road tennis, the future looks bright. (ML)
