Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill has recognised the contribution of women to tourism and urged that they be given equal opportunities in the industry.

He stressed the importance of their roles during the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) Women in Tourism Celebration on Monday.

The event at the BTMI headquarters also coincided with celebrations for Women’s History Month.

“Within the tourism industry, women are an integral part of the workforce with many working in areas such as hospitality, travel, and tourism management. Having myself worked in the industry for over two decades, I’ve seen firsthand the crucial role women play to
make tourism what it is,” Gooding-Edghill
said.

“Women bring their unique perspectives and innovations to the tourism industry, contributing to its growth and success. Their knowledge, skills and experiences help to promote cultural exchanges and understanding as well as contribute to the overall quality of the tourism experience. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that women in the tourism industry are given equal opportunities for employment, training and advancement, as well as a safe working environment,” Gooding-Edghill added.

This year, the BTMI awarded five women for sterling service over the years: Angela Garraway, Sylvia Jones, Carmeta Burrowes, Shontelle Edwards and Janice Clarke.

Minister Gooding-Edghill congratulated them and said it was crucial to highlight the efforts of women in the industry.

He said that “promoting their empowerment is not only essential for gender equality but also for the overall success and sustainability of the industry”.

“I am honoured to celebrate these five extraordinary women today. And on behalf of the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, I thank them for their contributions to our industries and community,” the Tourism Minister added. (SB)
