The Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited (BPWCCUL) has contributed $30 000 to add a culturally inspired painting to the University of the West Indies (UWI) Cave Hill Campus’ mural project.

During a brief ceremony on Friday, representatives of the credit union, UWI personnel and the artists responsible for the installation gathered for the unveiling of the mural on the university’s perimeter walls.

Deputy Principal Professor Winston Moore commended BPWCCUL for its contribution to the mural project which comes on the heels of the credit union’s other substantial contributions to the UWI, including scholarships ranging from $7 500 to $9 000.

“The Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited is no stranger to the UWI as it has been a long-time supporter of students pursuing their degrees at the UWI…. Today, however, the Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union Limited has further strengthened their relationship with the UWI through the sponsorship of this artwork,” he said.

“We sincerely look forward to future collaborations, not just through financial donations but also as it pertains to areas such as specialised training, entrepreneurial projects, and institutional development for both organisations.”

The mural done by local artists Rasheed Boodhoo, Don Small and Neville Legall depicts a typical Barbadian community from a bygone era.

President of the BPWCCUL Board of Directors Courtney Gibson said the idea behind the mural was in keeping with the credit union’s philosophy of collaboration being an important cornerstone in success.

“As you may all know, this mural is the result of the tireless efforts of talented and passionate artists. From the conception of the idea to the final touches, every single detail was carefully considered and executed with theutmost care.

“The credit union story, shared via this mural wall project, reminds us of the importance of collaboration, diversity, and inclusivity in building a strong and thriving community. We are also reminded that Barbados Public Workers’ Co-operative Credit Union is more than just a financial institution; it is a place where people come together to support one another and work towards a common goal,” he said.

The UWI Cave Hill Mural Project was conceptualised and launched by former Principal and Pro-Vice Chancellor Eudine Barriteau to complement the aesthetics of the campus and serve as “an artistic record of the history, culture and unique aspects of the beautiful country of Barbados while also paying homage to the UWI as an institution”, Professor Moore said.
