Moore gets wish to go to Psychiatric Hospital

Alleged thief Andrew Sylvester Moore serenaded a Bridgetown magistrate on Monday after she granted his request to be remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for assessment.

The 48-year-old from Church Village, St Philip appeared before Magistrate Alison Burke in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Monday, charged with stealing a bag, a power bank, a phone charger and a multipurpose gadget belonging to Peter Brito on March 30. The items had an approximate value of $298.

Moore denied committing the offence and Sergeant Verdon Forde objected to bail.

The prosecutor disclosed that the accused was known to the court, with the majority of his convictions under the Theft Act. He added that Moore had been released from prison last week and the prosecution feared he would re-offend if granted bail at this time.

Taking a look at his conviction card, the magistrate pointed out to Moore that he had 44 convictions, with all except three for theft offences.

In his application for bail, Moore stated that he was a “mental patient”.

He added: “I can’t stand jail because I can’t get my medication; I got to make noise. I want to go to the mental, Ma’am. Please, Ma’am, please. If not, can I get a fine then?”

After hearing the submissions, Magistrate Burke remanded Moore to the Psychiatric Hospital for assessment and report.

“Thank you, Ma’am. Ma’am, I going to sing for you,” he replied before bursting out in a song that no one in the court could
decipher.

Moore will spend the next 21 days at the Psychiatric Hospital being assessed and will reappear before the court on April 24.
