First time fashion show on skates a big hit!

For the first time in the history of Barbados, an exclusive skate fashion show came off successfully with models ripping the “runway” all on skates.

Themed “Essence of Time On Wheels” the show took place at the Christ Church Foundation School, at Church Hill on Saturday, March 25, and it highlighted fashion trends from the 70s to the present day.

Show Producer Sylvester Maynard was pleased with the outcome. “Everybody was excited. Everybody loved the fashions and the models – they lived up to expectations and even beyond expectations. I was expecting them to do well, but they really handled themselves [superb],” he said.

The Skaters made a presentation to MC for the evening Michale Mykey Moda Layne.

The show was presented in four categories – Back in Time, Casual, Up Cycle and Evening Wear and there was positive feedback all around. “What I am pleased about also is that total strangers came to me and said – listen, you have to do another show. I had almost ten other people telling me that we must do another show,” Maynard gushed.

These two dressed up for the occasion.

Fashion designer Harvey “Mashpotato” Smith said he was thrilled with the overall production. “In my opinion, the fashion event went quite well. The fact is that everyone who attended left pleased. They asked Margaret and myself to do it again. It was the first time that a fashion show was ever held [with] models on skates and I knew that it would come off, but I did not know it would have gone that well,” he said, adding that he was a bit surprised.

The other half of the duo of the two main fashion designers, Margaret Taylor, expressed delight at the encouragement. “Regarding the fashion show, it was great. My friend Harvey and I put our heads together and decided we were going to do this and we got quite encouraged to do it by the skaters,” she said.

Those wanting more fashion shows on skates can expect it later this year, according to Maynard. “We decided that on December 20th we will put on another show titled as Essence in Time Part 2. We will flesh out the name but we will be doing another show,” he said.

Star skaters included “Pinky”, “Gale”, “Dolly” and “Katrina” and the men who ripped the runway were “Oxley”, “Patrick” and Maynard himself, amongst others. Ignite and Skyy Dowridge were special guest performers.
