Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 580 Enriched with the vivid colours of the Barbadian landscape, with the picturesque Odeum at Mangrove in St. Philip as the backdrop, gospel singer Sherry Ann Maughan created the music video for Keep Me Baba. Recently, her biggest supporters and collaborators on the project gathered upstairs at Sky Mall for its premiere with a watch party. With an Afro-centric theme, the ambience was set with gold draped columns and complimentary-hued balloons. Draped in Ankara fabric, the artiste looked Afro-chic for the intimate event. In the lead up to the showing, attendees had the opportunity to quiz the singer as she was interviewed by fellow creative Arnal “Gozzy” Goslin from charity Ekco Nation. Though no stranger to the entertainment scene, Maughan was still visibly nervous in the countdown to the debut. The entire project has sentimental value to her because of the significance of the song in her life. The performer shared, “Keep Me Baba is a song that I released in 2020. It was very close to my heart. It became a prayer for me after recovery with my son. It was very difficult. I had an emergency C-section and after that I had some trouble with my mobility and it really became a prayer for me.” Maughan’s desire to produce the music video never diminished, and she was determined to see the passion-project through. She said, “I started shooting it when I was pregnant with my daughter and… later on my pregnancy became rough and I had to stop. I had to pause and then I was like, you know what, I am pushing through and I am getting this completed!” Inspired by her love for the afro-genre, Maughan was entrenched in the production process. “I feel like it was my first project that I really was myself. All my artwork, I did my outfit, made the hat… I felt like it was the first opportunity to really put who I was out there. I think given that, it really became special for me, not only as in a prayer, but I feel like it’s a full expression of me as an artist, as a person,” she expressed. She shared, “I wanted to tie in fashion because you know us as African people we love full expression, we don’t just settle for the music, we show it in our hair, we show it in our clothes, we show it in our makeup. So, I wanted that full expression in the music video.” At precisely 7:30 p.m., guests were afforded first glimpses of the video, while the wider public could tune in on the artiste’s YouTube channel to watch it simultaneously. Local creatives who were featured in the video and were also in attendance included the Multifarious Dancers and fellow singer Larix. Attendees also enjoyed a live performance of the song. Maughan breathed a sigh of relief when there were calls for an encore. She told Barbados TODAY, “Feedback was great. People were happy to be a part of it. They loved the video, so that was received wonderfully. They told me what their favourite parts were, so getting that feedback was great.” The watch party was an expression of thank you to all involved and the performer appreciated all the support she received. The video was shot by her brother-in- law Stephen Maughan from Kirmitography and directed by Alicia Payne Hurley from Caribbean Management while the editing was done by Andrew Thornhill. Africa Connect in Sheraton sponsored some of the accessories, and Movement 1 was also a part of it. With the launch completed, Maughan’s focus will now shift to the release of her singles’ compilation album. Set to be released digitally in August, it will feature all of her previously released singles, including Winner, which was released in 2019 and her very first song Born to Worship.
