COB credit union’s 40th anniversary celebrations continue

The month-long 40th anniversary celebrations for the City of Bridgetown (COB) Co-operative Credit Union Limited continued Saturday morning with various stakeholders gathered at their Six Roads branch for both the burial of a time capsule and the unveiling of a plaque.

Vice President of the Board of Directors Steven Jemmott emphasized the importance of the activities.

“This time capsule burial ceremony was conceptualised to solidify our commitment to protecting the history of the COB credit union and by extension the credit union movement, which has been so pivotal to the enfranchisement of endless Barbadians,” he said.

“This activity is a step in the right direction as we continue to celebrate the achievement of a significant milestone of our 40th anniversary.”

The items placed in the capsule were meticulously selected to represent both prosperous and challenging times, with a special effort made to include the period of the COVID-19 pandemic, Jemmott said.

“We therefore saw it fitting to include some symbols of this time with technological developments and movements toward a cashless system. We no doubt must chronicle these things which we currently use which can cease to exist in the not-too-distant future,” he said.

Acknowledging that the credit union is nothing without its people, he shared that persons would hear the thoughts of some of the members surrounding their vision for the organisation when the time capsule is opened during their 80th anniversary celebrations.

Jemmott concluded, “It is our intention to remain committed to our membership and the communities that we serve.”

He said preserving these moments and maintaining elements of COB’s history will guide future actions.

The day’s activities continued with an islandwide treasure hunt.

This was followed by the Family Fun-o-a-Ramma and Concert Experience at King George V Park slated to run from 1 pm to 8 pm.  The lineup will feature some of the island’s top entertainers, including RPB, Blood, T.C., and the reigning Calypso Monarch, Ian Webster. Also in the lineup are the winners of the 2022 and 2023 editions of the Baje to the World competition, Tarique Griffith, and Kyrique Alleyne.
