Ian Antonio Babb returns to the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Thursday after pleading not guilty to assaulting, resisting and using threatening words to police officers.

The 43-year-old resident of Hurley’s Land, Fairfield, St Michael, is accused of assaulting Police Constables Shakeel Nicholls and Derick Boyce in the execution of their duties and resisting Nicholls on October 16, 2023.

It is also alleged that he used the threatening words ‘I ain’t afraid of no police. I would stab and kill wunna. If wunna bad, come and take the knife and let me stab one of wunna’ towards Nicholls and Vivian Alleyne, and they were likely to believe that unlawful violence would be used against them.

Objecting to bail, Constable Troy Tudor argued that police must be able to do their jobs without fearing members of the public and that society must be protected from the accused. The prosecutor also pointed to the accused’s antecedents.

Babb argued that his record showed he had never been before the court for the type of acts of which he is now accused. In addition, the unemployed man said he had always shown up to court when required.

“Ma’am, I have never missed a court date yet, and I am not a violent person. You can check my charge sheet,” he insisted.

Magistrate Bernadeth John initially granted the accused $2 500 bail but then remanded him into custody after the court heard that attempts to reach a surety had failed.

She adjourned the matter until Thursday.
