The Roman Catholic Church Diocese of Bridgetown will be hosting an inaugural 5K charity walk on Sunday, November 12 for the benefit of a children’s home.

During a recent press conference, Bishop Neil Scantlebury said proceeds from the sale of t-shirts for the walk will go to the Marina Brewster Centre at Farrs in St Peter. It is hoped that the walk will attract more than 1 000 participants.

The theme of the activity, which will begin at the National Botanical Gardens at 3:30 p.m., is The Walk to Help, a Journey to Uplift. The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Barbados (HSFB) has partnered with the church to put on the event.

Scantlebury said the collaboration was important as the HSFB “helps us to stay physically healthy and we, the Catholic Church, help you to be spiritually healthy. Therefore, being together, we help you to have the whole body and soul in good health”.

HSFB representative Greta Yearwood said her organisation was pleased to be involved in the activity.

“We will have our nurses on board to conduct the pressure testing before and after the walk and also your body mass index tests will be taken. So we are participating and looking at the health of the nation and the health of all involved,” she said.

Rosalind Jackson, representative of Caribbean Catalyst Inc., which is one of the sponsors of the event, said it was a good initiative as it encouraged children to be active.

Principal of the St Patrick Roman Catholic Primary School Dr Marvalene Roach said she was pleased that the students were invited to participate in the walk as it would not only be a fun, family-friendly exercise but it would teach them the importance of giving back to their community.

The diaspora will also have the opportunity to join in the activity as it will be streamed.

To register for the walk, interested persons are asked to contact the organisers at 426-3510 or send an email to catholiccommbb@gmail.com. T-shirts are $40 for adults and $15 for children and can be purchased at the Bishop’s office in Ladymeade Gardens or at the parish churches.
