Barbados is to be the first recipient of the newly established Owen Arthur Scholarship valued at US$25 000, courtesy of the Florida-Caribbean Cruise Association (FCCA) Foundation.
The annual scholarship, named in honour of the former Barbados prime minister, was initiated to support future generations throughout the Caribbean and will be awarded in a different regional destination each year.
Minister of Tourism and International Transport Ian Gooding-Edghill described the opportunity as a national honour, stating that the scholarship will not only benefit non-profit organisations and institutions of learning, but the Barbados society as a whole.
He was speaking during the launch of the scholarship, hosted by the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) on Friday.
The minister lauded the FCCA for its dedication to championing social causes which, according to him, “will address the needs of youth – one of Barbados’ most critical groups”.
“The funding available through this scholarship presents a significant opportunity for deserving entities to receive the necessary financial aid to continue the ground work previously started,” he said, noting that the funds may be used for a specific community-based project, the purchase of capital equipment, or to cover general operating expenses.
Gooding-Edghill invited charitable organisations and educational institutions to complete and submit their application by the deadline of June 3, 2024.
Initiator of the scholarship fund and FCCA’s Chief Executive Officer, Michelle Paige, who addressed the launch virtually, said the scholarship was fashioned to “honour a man who created the ability for FCCA member-lines and the Caribbean to communicate”.
“I am honoured that the foundation can continue the legacy of Owen Arthur, who not only inspired my career but also empowered so many throughout the Caribbean,” she added.
Paige also emphasised the scholarship’s role in strengthening the partnership between the cruise industry and Caribbean nations.
The scholarship is a continuation of the FCCA’s contribution to Barbadian youth. Students are again being invited to participate in the foundation’s essay contest, open to children up to age 16.
The competition, according to BTMI’s Chief Product Development Officer Marsha Alleyne, provides an invaluable opportunity for Barbadian students to contribute their perspectives on sustainable tourism.
The deadline for the FCCA Children Essay Contest is July 5.
