After a five-week break due to maintenance at the Garrison Savannah, races resume this evening with the feature event, the Royal Opera Breeders Stakes and Trophy going 1 800 metres for Barbados Bred 3-year-olds. Heroes Day is tipped to run away the victor. The Royal Opera Breeders Stakes and Trophy will be race 4 on the 6-race card to run at 7:15 p.m., with a purse of $25 000 a race. The events are sponsored by Old Brigand Rum. Heroes Day owned by Bill Inc and trained by Victor Cheeseman was not as successful as his sire, 2012 Barbados Guineas winner Aston Martin. Heroes Day’s jockey had fallen during the 2024 running of the Guineas in which he was one of the favourites after winning the start. Out of the locally-bred mare Super Lady, Heroes Day broke his maiden on March 16 sitting in 2nd place on the early pace before scoring in a driving finish at 1 570 metres over Papillion. Rickey Walcott has the call on Heroes Day, 124 pounds from Gate 2. The other key contender is Guineas runner-up Luscious owned by Gay Smith and trained by Edward Walcott; Bred by stallion Lion King who produced 2017 Derby winner Butterfly, Luscious will be at shorter odds this time around. Antonio Bishop has the ride, 119 pounds. Three-year-old filly Moschara by double Sandy Lane Gold Cup winning stallion Dorsett is one of the most consistent horses in the field, having three starts this year with two second-place finishes and picking up a 3rd place in the Guineas. Papillion by hot local stallion Aston Martin won for the first time in his career on April 27. Trained by Romel Lovell, 3-year-old filly Papillion comes from a derby-winning bloodline. The rest of the field includes Show Time, Mo Farah, Brunei, and Makossa Princes. My selection is Heroes Day, Luscious, Moschara, and Papillion.
