My rotary journey

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work, we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: It is more blessed to give than to receive.” – Acts 20:35

My Rotary journey began in Barbados in September 1986, marking the start of a 38-year journey. I initially did not have a clue as to what being a Rotarian entailed. Still, I resonated with the Rotary International (RI) motto, Service Above Self, which encouraged giving back to my society and community. Having started my for-profit business 10 years earlier, the Rotary’s arrival in my life felt like a perfect complement.

I quickly learned that RI, formed in 1905, had expanded to over 150 countries, all operating under a unified governance system. The Rotary Foundation, an integral part of RI, is one of the world’s most effective charities. Rotary clubs are organised into international districts, each handling various avenues of service, including administration, youth development, fundraising, and service projects. Engaged members participate in weekly meetings to foster fellowship.

Annual district conferences and international conventions enhance fellowship and are filled with camaraderie and fun. Over the years, I have participated in many of these events and have seen the world through Rotary.

In 2013, I moved to Trinidad and transferred from the Rotary Club of Barbados South to the Rotary Club of Central Port of Spain (RCCPOS). Both clubs share similar size and dynamics, so the transition was smooth. I have enjoyed my fellowship with members in Trinidad, made new friends, and participated in club activities.

As I return to Barbados, I shall maintain my honorary membership with RCCPOS and aim to forge partnerships between the clubs, particularly in global enterprise development. This promising Rotary opportunity is waiting to happen, dependent on management and money – two resources at the heart of Rotary activity.

My Rotary journey will continue (Deo Volente) as I return home to embrace the compelling benefits of living in Barbados.

Recently, I was honoured with a wonderful farewell party at a fellow Rotarian’s home. If the sentiments and energy expressed there are exemplified, we have a bright Rotary “Service above Self” future ahead as the next generation begins to step into more significant leadership roles within RI.
