The number of road fatalities for the year has climbed to 18 with the deaths of 22-year-old motorcyclist Renaldo Elon Daniel and 72-year-old pedestrian Winfield Welch in separate accidents.

According to police, Welch, a resident of Greenfield, St Michael, was crossing the street at Salters Road, St George around 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday when he was hit by one car and then was struck by another and pinned under it.

The elderly man was extricated by personnel from the Barbados Fire Service but was pronounced dead at the scene.

The accident in which Daniel died occurred just before 1 a.m. on Thursday along Maxwell Main Road, Christ Church.

Police said the Rollins Road, Christ Church resident was riding a motorcycle in a westerly direction towards Top Rock when he lost control of it and was thrown off.

He was transported to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital by ambulance but died while receiving treatment.
Police investigations into both accidents – which bring the count of fatal collisions to 16 – are ongoing. (BT)
