Ex-UWI credit union worker accused of stealing over $114 000

A former clerical officer at the UWI Cave Hill Cooperative Credit Union Limited is facing 190 charges related to the theft of $114 695 from the financial institution over a two-year period.

When Janet Cox appeared before Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, she pleaded not guilty to the charges.

It is alleged that the Fisherpond, St Thomas woman stole amounts ranging from $100 to over $2 000 between 2017 and 2020.

After reading the charges, Chief Magistrate Weekes released Cox on $25 000 bail with one surety, but attached some strict conditions for her to follow.

The accused, who is represented by attorney Fay Burke in association with Michael Lashley SC, was ordered to surrender her passport to the court, although it is expired, by midday on Wednesday. She must also report to the District ‘F’ Police Station by 3 p.m., every Saturday.

Cox was also informed by the magistrate that if she intended to apply for a new passport, she would need to inform the court and surrender any new one she received.

Her lawyer informed the court that she was no longer employed by the UWI credit union, and was working elsewhere.

The case was adjourned until February 3, 2025, when Cox is scheduled to appear before Magistrate Allison Burke in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court.
