Officials touted the inaugural visit of the Ritz-Carlton Ilma as a sign of the islandโs growing appeal in the high-end cruise market. At a ceremony at the Port of Bridgetown to celebrate the inaugural visit of the ship that was launched last year, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and International Transport, Francine Blackman, said: โDuring the period of January to November 2024, we saw a 23 per cent increase in total cruise ship arrivals over the same period for the previous year. โThis has been confirmed by our Barbados Statistical Department, and they reported a total of 649 125 cruise arrivals for the period January to November 2024 over 526 114 cruise arrivals for the same period in 2023.โ Blackman described the growth as a testament to the islandโs efforts to diversify and enhance its cruise offerings. Known for its luxurious amenities, the superyacht features 224 suites with private terraces and accommodates up to 448 passengers. Blackman also highlighted Barbadosโ commitment to improving the portโs facilities in response to customer feedback. โWhat you are witnessing within the Barbados Port is that we have listened and responded to some of the concerns raised by our customers,โ she said. โThe upgrades you see are reflective of our responsiveness, and we will continue to listen attentively to ensure we meet your needs as we go on to service you and other cruise ships.โ Stressing the importance of the luxury cruise market to Barbadosโ tourism strategy, Blackman noted the focus on aggressive marketing to position the island as a premier destination in the southeastern Caribbean. โWe look forward to welcoming more luxury yachts like the Ritz-Carlton Ilma to Barbados,โ she said. CEO of Barbados Port Inc., David Jean-Marie, further noted the economic value of attracting high-end luxury yachts. โIt is important because those are customers who may very well have an interest in investing,โ he said. โThese visitors often return and stay in high-end hotels, and some arrive via private jets.
