The Springer Memorial School showed love on Valentine’s Day with donations to the three charities to support the important community work they do.

Making a brief presentation on Friday, Acting Principal Vernell Woods expressed the all-girl secondary school’s pride in contributing important items to Kids Helping Kids Inc., St Barnabas Senior Citizen Daycare Centre, and Verdun and Marina Houses.

“Today is a show of love and giving; items were collected throughout the school and given to charities we thought that were deserving,” she said. “We encouraged each year group to bring different items, they did not have a lot of time in which to collect, but they came forward and gave generously. Normally [this collection] is done at Christmas but circumstances did not allow it last year, and we decided to hold it today on Valentine’s Day.”

Woods also noted that one of the charities, Helping Kids Inc., was formed by a Springer alumna, Shakira Boxill.

“First of all it is a real experience to have a student so motivated to want to do something for members of the society. So without doubt we are glad to have been able to contribute to her effort,” Woods said.

Boxill, who formed her organisation three years ago to help children in the disabled community and among the disadvantaged, was thankful for the assistance: “I just want to continue contributing and assisting and making these children feel loved. I really feel good that I am here at the Springer School, this is where I started my journey, and I feel good to know that I can give back to those in need from my old school.”

Stanley Alleyne, coordinator of the St Barnabas Senior Citizen Daycare Centre, said: “There are at least 25 members there, males and females from all over Barbados, and they are very happy to be there with us. We share memories, we share memories, and I am sure this gift here today will go a long way in helping to share some love among them and among their families.”
