Rawlston Carrington told police he was unaware the teenager he had been having sex with was underage until her mother informed him.
The resident of Montrose, Christ Church, stood in the dock of the No. 4 Supreme Court on Monday and pleaded guilty that between January 5, 2009, and August 31, 2009, he had sexual intercourse with a girl who had attained the age of 14 but had not yet attained the age of 16 and who was not his spouse.
Carrington, who was 27 at the time of the offence, said in his written statement that he met the girl at a friend’s house, and they exchanged numbers and began texting. When he asked her age, she said, “16 going on 17”, and as they continued talking, he began to fall for her because she was “nice, different and smart”.
One day, after her sister called his phone and asked who he was, her “very vexed” mother called, and after their conversation, he stopped texting the complainant.
Carrington said that after he and the complainant saw each other again at Sheraton, they resumed texting, but while he wanted to be friends, she wanted to be together.
His statement continued: “She was on me bout it, so I say yes to make her stop asking me, and when I wanted to stop talking to her, she told me that she would **** me up; if she can’t get me, no other girl would get me when she done with me. I told her she had to finish school and then we could be together. So she started to cry and that’s when everything started to come out her mouth, and I could not believe that was the same person. I did like her a lot and she was a cool friend to talk with.”
In his oral statement to police, he admitted to having sex with the girl at her residence and his own, and when asked to show where, Carrington replied, “I will show you, officer, ‘cause this girl got me in too much trouble.”
After he was formally charged, Carrington told the police, “The law want changing cause men don’t have rights.”
Meanwhile, in her deposition, the complainant said that after they met, Carrington would continuously text her, telling her he loved her and asking her how she was. She said after finding out, her mother quarrelled with her, telling her Carrington did not love her.
She said they resumed texting after seeing each other at Sheraton. The virtual complainant said Carrington told her one day to let her know when her mother had left home, and she did so. He came over and had sexual intercourse with her that day. Afterwards, they continued to have sex at her home and his. She began writing in her diary about what was happening, and one day, he informed her he wanted to break up with her, saying he was going away to see his father, but she did not believe him.
The complainant returned home one day, found her mother reading her diary, and admitted that it was the person she had told her not to talk with. Her mother took her to the police station.
Defence attorney Shadia Simpson requested a pre-sentence report for her client.
State Counsel Paul Prescod is prosecuting the case.
Madam Justice Laurie-Ann Smith-Bovell adjourned the matter until May 27.
