The Regional Security System (RSS) on Wednesday officially opened a new Logistics Hub and Maritime Centre of Excellence at Paragon, Christ Church, in partnership with the United States government.
The facilities, funded through the U.S. Southern Command under Title X counterdrug assistance, are designed to strengthen regional maritime operations and boost the capacity of coast guards and marine units across member states.
The Logistics Hub will support the maintenance and distribution of maritime parts and equipment under the RSS Maritime Programme and the U.S.-led Technical Assistance Field Team (TAFT) initiative.
The Maritime Centre of Excellence — the first of its kind in the Eastern Caribbean — will offer training in engine maintenance, logistics, and diving operations.
It is expected to play a key role in combating drug trafficking and other transnational crimes.
“This is the realisation of a vision that began over seven years ago,” said RSS Executive Director, Commodore Errington Ricardo Shurland during a brief ceremony.
“These facilities will enhance operational readiness and support regional security.”
Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy, Karin Sullivan, said the project reflects the strong partnership between the U.S. and the RSS.
“The RSS is a force multiplier,” she said.
“This facility demonstrates our shared commitment to a safe and secure Eastern Caribbean.” (SM)
