Founded on October 1, 1964, and named in honour of pioneering educator Florence Springer, who herself became a head teacher at just 20 years old, the school holds a unique place in Barbados’ educational landscape. To this day, it remains the only secondary institution dedicated solely to the education and development of young women. From its modest beginnings with just 300 students and 13 teachers, Springer has blossomed into a powerhouse of academic excellence, athletic dominance and leadership, producing generations of trailblazers who have impacted Barbados and the wider world. The Founders’ Day service featured proud alumni as role models, like Assistant Commissioner of Police Sonia Boyce, a leader in a traditionally male-dominated field, and guest speaker Dr Nikita Maynard-Hinds, a medical doctor and motivational voice for the next generation. Dr Maynard-Hinds told the gathering that the anniversary theme perfectly captured the Springer spirit. “Springer women are steadfast because we come from a tradition of resilience,” she said. “We are motivated because we know that when we put our minds to something, nothing can hold us back. And we soar because we were taught here that limits only exist if you accept them.” She reminded current students that success must always be bigger than the individual. “When you rise, you must bring others with you. Your success is not just for yourself but for your families, your communities, and this nation. That is how Springer Queens will continue to change Barbados and the world.” You Might Be Interested In A simpler way to bank Make wise choices A family affair Principal Sonja Goodridge also tied the anniversary to the school’s enduring symbol, the eagle: “The eagle teaches us to soar above every storm. At 61, we are more resilient, more purposeful, and more motivated than ever to achieve excellence,” she said. That excellence is evident across every sphere. Springer has captured 16 national athletic championships, nurtured scholars and innovators, and produced women who have served as senators, ministers, teachers, nurses, business leaders, athletes and public servants. Its motto, “Members One of Another”, continues to inspire unity, sisterhood, and the belief that every Springer Queen has a role to play in lifting the other higher. Dr Maynard-Hinds summed up the heart of the celebration with words that resonated deeply, “The theme Steadfast and Motivated: Soaring to Success is not just a slogan; it is who we are. Springer Queens are living proof that with faith, resilience, and determination, there is no limit to what women can achieve.” (LE) Barbados Today Stay informed and engaged with our digital news platform.
