MP champions love and community spirit in crime fight

As violent incidents continue to impact neighbourhoods across the island, Minister of People Empowerment and Elder Affairs Kirk Humphrey is urging Barbadians to place love back at the centre of community life.

Speaking during a Love Walk through his St Michael South constituency on Saturday, he said the initiative was aimed at reshaping the narrative around local communities.

“We have a lot of communities that are filled with talent: the Bay Land, Brittons Hill, the Pine, Haynesville and so on. But what they are making the news for now is a lot of negative stories, but I do know that there is a lot of love in these areas, and the idea was to build on the love and to be able to say, ‘This is who we are as a people.’ ”

Reflecting on personal loss within the community, the minister added, “I would have lost a few of my constituents regrettably, and more recently, we lost one that was very integral to our team as well.”

He continued, “We want to say…enough is enough. We have had enough of that nonsense; let us show Barbados who we really are, and the heart of the Barbadian people is love.”

The Member of Parliament expressed satisfaction with the turnout, highlighting the wide mix of participants and noting that the call for love and an end to violence resonates with Barbadians of all ages.

He confirmed that the Love Walk will be held annually, alongside other initiatives designed to strengthen unity and compassion.

Humphrey added that the event may not remain confined to St Michael South, as the National Peace Program could possibly support its expansion into communities across the island. (STT)
