SSA efficiently removes waste after long weekend

Following a full slate of Easter weekend activities, the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) moved swiftly to clear garbage from roadways and sidewalks, particularly in the Oistins area.

The weekend saw the hosting of the Oistins Fish Festival in Christ Church, an annual event that features local food and activities and provides an opportunity for vendors and other businesses to ply their trades along the roadways.

Public relations officer of the SSA, Carl ‘Alf’ Padmore, reported an incident-free weekend, with officers working swiftly each day to clear the roadways before the next day’s activities.

“We did the removal of the waste on the morning after each night or each day’s event, so that made it easier.”

“This is a routine the fellas are accustomed to. They would have done this even for Spring Garden and other events, so nothing new,” Padmore said.

While acknowledging that the clean up went smoothly, Padmore said the SSA was still battling to deal with the improper disposal of oil.

“Cooking oil is not to be placed for the removal by the SSA. It’s still your responsibility to reach out to private haulers who deal with the removal of cooking oil and grease. They are not to be placed or set down next to bins for the removal by the SSA. We deal with household trash,” Padmore said.

“That’s according to the Health Services Act, but cooking oil should not be placed for removal by the SSA. That’s still a bugbear for us, and it still happens in Bridgetown.”

Meanwhile, head of the National Conservation Commission, Ryan Als, said cleaning was executed smoothly at beach and picnic sites.

“Everything went smoothly as far as we know.”

“We have a team that goes out over the weekend; we do it every Easter. There’s a team that goes out in the afternoons to clean up the sites for the next morning, and that was in place,” Als said.
