BMS issues Small Craft and High Surf Advisory for rough seas

Boat operators and seabathers are being warned to expect dangerous sea conditions from Thursday night, as strong winds and swells of up to 10 feet are forecast across Barbados’ marine area.

The Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) has issued a Small Craft and High Surf Advisory, with the hazardous conditions expected to persist for the remainder of the week.

Winds of 20 to 25 knots, possibly reaching 30 knots at times, are expected from as early as Wednesday night, while swells of two to three metres are forecast from Thursday night.

The Met Office warns that large swells could make it difficult for smaller vessels to operate and that sea conditions may become unpredictable at times.

Beachgoers are also being cautioned about rough breaking waves, coastal sea spray and beach erosion, with some beaches potentially becoming submerged, particularly below cliffs and around high tide.

The BMS said: “If you intend to go into the water, it is recommended that you use beaches with on-duty lifeguards.”

The advisory is scheduled to be updated at 6 p.m. Thursday, August 13, or sooner if conditions warrant.

Sea conditions are expected to begin improving early next week, the BMS said.
