Small Craft, High Surf Warning in effect as tropical wave nears

All eyes are on the Atlantic as the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) continues to monitor a tropical wave that could bring strong winds, heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and rough seas to the islane from Friday night into Saturday.

The system, located about 1 056 miles East of Barbados at 11 a.m. Thursday, is forecast to pass north of the island from Friday night into Saturday as a “strong tropical wave”.

The BMS said, “strong winds ahead of the tropical wave have already caused a deteriotation in sea conditions and the small-craft and high-surf advisory has been elevated to a small-craft and high-surf warning. Additionally, high winds, excess rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated over Barbados. Other watches and warnings may be issued in association with this feature as it affects our area.”

No tropical storm watches or warnings are currently in effect for the island, the BMS stated in the latest bulletin on the system.
The Met Office added that a second tropical wave located near 2 006 miles East of Barbados in the Eastern Atlantic is also expected to be “in a marginally conducive environment as it tracks to the northwest over the next few days.” However, it said, current model guidance does not suggest any significant impact to Barbados at this time.
