BMS continues to track Tropical Wave

Strong winds ahead of a tropical wave approaching Barbados are causing sea conditions to deteriorate, with high winds, excess rainfall and thunderstorms expected to affect the island from Friday night into Saturday.

As such, the Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) said a Small Craft and High Surf Warning remains in effect as the tropical wave moves closer to the island. There are currently no tropical storm watches or warnings in effect.

At 5 a.m., the system, according to the BMS, was located about 535 miles (860 kilometres) East of Barbados.

“The wave has remained disorganised overnight, as dry air and unfavorable upper-level winds continue to significantly impact the development of the system. Additionally, environmental conditions over the next 24-48 hours are still expected to be unfavourable for tropical cyclone development,” the Met Office said.

However, it warned that high winds, excess rainfall and thunderstorms are anticipated to affect the island, and additional watches or warnings could be issued if conditions warrant.
Meanwhile, the Met Office is also monitoring a second tropical wave located near 1 661 miles or 2674km East of the island.

This system forecasters say “is expected to be in a marginally conducive environment as it tracks to the West over the next few days. However, current model guidance does not suggest any significant impact to Barbados at this time.”
