CARPHA concludes high-level mission to Haiti

The Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) has concluded a high-level mission to Haiti aimed at strengthening regional cooperation on major public health risks.

The delegation, led by CARPHA Executive Director Dr Lisa Indar, visited Haiti from August 23 to 25 and held discussions with national health authorities on the country’s existing capacity, challenges and areas requiring additional support.

Haiti’s Health Minister Bertrand Sinal acknowledged the difficulties facing the country’s health system but said it also had significant strengths.

“We know the country’s weaknesses. We know the weaknesses of the system, its constraints, its needs, and the pressure that health professionals face daily. But we also know its strengths,” he said.

The CARPHA delegation also visited the Justinien University Hospital and the Sacré-Cœur Hospital in Milot to examine epidemiological surveillance, laboratory operations and preparations for public health crises and emergencies.

Officials stressed the importance of regional cooperation, information sharing and coordination in tackling health threats that cross national borders.
