Alleged 9/11 mastermind to face trial in 2028

Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, is scheduled to go on trial before a US military court on June 5, 2028.

Mohammed, also known as KSM, was captured in Pakistan in March 2003 and held in secret CIA facilities for three years before being transferred to the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, in 2006.

His trial has been repeatedly delayed. A plea agreement that would have removed the possibility of the death penalty was withdrawn last year.

Mohammed has said he masterminded the September 11 attacks “from A to Z”. Nearly 3000 people were killed when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon outside Washington, while another crashed in Pennsylvania.

He has also claimed involvement in the 1993 World Trade Center bombing and the killing of US journalist Daniel Pearl in 2002.
