Kraigg Brathwaite

With the 2019 Barbados Cricket Association (BCA) Super Cup starting tomorrow, opener Kraigg Brathwaite of CounterPoint Wanderers holds the record for the most centuries (nine) in the island’s top one-day Championship.

Seven of Brathwaite’s centuries are for Wanderers and the others for Barbados Youth. Ironically, his first ton was against Wanderers at the Lester Vaughan School ground, Cane Garden, in 2009.

Brathwaite, the 26-year-old Barbados Pride and West Indies Test player, has a comfortable lead over six other players – four of whom are still active.

Jointly in second position with five are former Spartan opener Philo Wallace, Romel Currency, who represented Sagicor Life UWI (both retired), Dwayne Smith (Bayview Hospital YMPC), Kenroy Williams of Crane Resort St. Catherine, his club-mate Alcindo Holder and Shayne Moseley of Wanderers.

Wallace, a former Barbados captain and West Indies player known for his pugnacious batting and who served Spartan with distinction for 15 years between 1989 and 2004 after making his local domestic debut for Combined Schools (now Barbados Youth) in 1987, was the first to score five centuries – between 2000 and 2003.

Currency, a Vincentian with first-class experience, who studied at the Cave Hill Campus of the University of the West Indies, hit his hundreds between 2007 and 2010.

Only three batsmen – Ryan Wiggins, Shayne Moseley and Leniko Boucher – have amassed 500 runs in a season.

The record of 620 is held by Moseley, who achieved the feat last season in nine innings including two centuries and three fifties, at an average of 68.89.

Wiggins was the first ever player to score 500 runs in a Tournament. He made 526 from 11 innings with one hundred and four half-centuries, at an average of 47.82 for YMPC in 2016.

Last year, Boucher scored 530 runs from 11 innings containing one hundred and four half-centuries, at an average of 53.00 for UWI.

Only two double-centuries have ever been scored.

Dale Richards, a former Barbados and West Indies opener, made 202 for Carlton against Banks (now Wildey) at Black Rock (renamed as Desmond Haynes Oval) in 2006.

And Jamaican Chadwick Walton, also with international experience, slammed 207 for UWI against Carlton at the 3Ws Oval in 2016.

The record for the most centuries (22) in a season has been achieved twice – in 2016 and 2018.

The Competition was contested as a 40-over-a-side between 1972 and 2000.

It was known as the Derrick Robins Tournament between 1972 and 1974 before Barbados Fire & Commercial Insurance Co. Ltd (later renamed Sagicor General) took over in 1975 and maintained their sponsorship until 2015.

Cup matches were brought up to international standard from 2001 as they were played over 50 overs a side.

The Super Cup was launched three years later.
