Wills Primary School hosted their inaugural Turtle-y Awesome Day at their Maxwell, Christ Church headquarters.

The day was organised by teacher and volunteer at The Barbados Sea Turtle Project Athena El-Badoui and was a part of the school’s celebration for World Turtle Day which is observed each year on May 23.

Speaking to the media, El-Badoui said the school celebrated for the entire week and activities culminated today with the presentation which was made by the Barbados Sea Turtle Project.

“It was explained to them that the money they donate would go towards Save-A-Turtle because everybody’s efforts count. We have been selling these turtle things since Monday. The conclusion was today and we raised over $600 thanks to the children. Some of them donated money without buying anything because they wanted to save the turtles,” she said.

El- Badoui added that the educational turtle which they used for the interactive session with the students is an instrument the Barbados Sea Turtle Project does not subscribe to.

“This here is George. He was found in an attic when someone bought a house and he was killed to be made into this. It’s a part of our past which we have moved away from since we are trying to save these turtles from extinction. The person that found it actually donated it to the Barbados Sea Turtle Project for us to use for educational purposes. As I said, we do not encourage this practice as we are all about saving the turtles and help them to not be endangered anymore,” she said.

The students presented Director of Public Awareness and Education at the Barbados Sea Turtle Project Carla Daniel with the cheque to assist with operations at that organisation.

In her interactive session, students outlined ways in which they could help ensure that sea turtles and their eggs are not affected during hatching season. Daniel encouraged students to contact the Barbados Sea Turtle Project if they stumbled across a newly hatched turtle. (LG)
