After two years on remand, an alleged fraudster was granted bail on Wednesday so he could have a medical procedure done to rectify a hearing impediment.
Jennoah Sylvester Woodley, a contractor of Eastbourne #2, St Philip, had been on remand at HMP Dodds since 2019 on several fraud charges.
He is charged with stealing $3 000 belonging to Yohance Reece between November 16 and December 12, 2017, stealing $6 000 belonging to Charmaine Sobers on November 17, 2017, and $1 000 belonging to Sobers on December 5, 2017.
Woodley is also accused of stealing: $5 000 belonging to Latchman Baljit on June 8, 2018; $5 000 belonging to Trevor Forde, sometime between December 6, 2018 and December 18, 2018; $20 000 belonging to Kevin Williams, between June 18, 2015, and August 10, 2015; $5 000 belonging to Barbara Beste between February 1, 2015 and November 3, 2015; and $10 000 belonging to Rosalee Green on March 15, 2017.
His attorney, Queen’s Counsel Michael Lashley told the court that while Woodley was remanded to the penal institution his hearing had deteriorated rapidly.
In making a bail application, Lashley told Chief Magistrate Ian Weekes that his client had no issues when he was initially remanded. However, he said, the hearing challenges had subsequently developed and Woodley was not getting the necessary and proper treatment in prison.
Lashley told the court he had written to the prison authorities seeking assistance, but help had been slow in coming.
The senior attorney said his client would be better suited on the outside where he would be able to have a medical procedure done to improve his hearing.
Chief Magistrate Weekes granted Woodley bail in the sum of $10 000 with several conditions. He was placed on a 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. curfew and will have to report to the police three times weekly.
The magistrate told Lashley to ensure Woodley has the medical procedure done on at least one ear, so he is able to hear him when he returns to court on October 11, 2021.
