Competing at the 2022 Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) Jubilee Series two on Saturday in Kingston, Williams powered her way to victory on the home stretch to secure the ladies 400m race. In so doing she earned a place on the Barbados team for the 18th edition of the World Athletics Championships in Eugene, Oregon, the United States scheduled for July 15 to 24th, 2022. Williams who resides in Jamaica and is coached by the renowned Stephen Francis at the MVP track and field club is expected to have a busy year when she competes at the Commonwealth Games scheduled for July, 28th to August 8th in Birmingham as well as the Diamond League. The 24-year-old Williams currently holds both the Barbados 200m and 400m records. She clocked 50.11 seconds to place third in the semifinals of the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games and in so doing shattered Lorna Forde’s 43-year-old record. In the 200m, her record stands at 22.61 seconds. Williams joins her former Coleridge and Parry Secondary School and later Harrison College schoolmate Jonathan Jones who was the first Barbadian athlete to qualify for the World Athletics Championships. The national 400m record holder Jones continues to impress and ran a brilliant 44.79 seconds race to win the men’s 400m recently at the Louisiana State University Invitational in Baton Rouge.
