Get back to God, Bajans urged

A former educator wants Barbadians to reconnect with God to address the nation’s growing moral challenges.

Education Director of the East Caribbean Conference of Seventh-day Adventists, Andrea Hoyte believes returning to the Biblical creation story could help foster values that combat violence.

She made the comments while at a Creation Week display, which she said aims to teach children about the story of salvation starting with creation, at the SDA Conference Centre on Collymore Rock.

“I have realised that many of us, even Christians, are setting aside that origin, that important aspect of where we came from,” she said.

“When we throw the creation story out, we throw out the existence of God and all the experience of the church and the importance of the church in our lives in helping to build our relationship with God. When we do that, we throw all morality on all right and wrong out. For that reason, we have so much immorality developing in our country and worldwide. We need to go back to God, we need to go back to the basics,” Hoyte added.

The Creation Week interactive display welcomed students from the Seventh-day Adventist Primary School, located at the corner of Dalkeith Road and Brittons Hill, and neighbouring schools.

Hoyte said the visiting students responded positively to the display.

“The teachers from the Milton Lynch School who we had here and the principal were very appreciative. The students were as well. They were able to share with me what they learned and it was a really good experience for them. There was just excitement,” she reported.

The creation story display will remain open until Sunday and is free of charge.
