As part of Education Month in October, the fourth form year group at The St Michael School executed a successful two-week Literacy Drive, collecting nearly 600 books, puzzles, and educational toys which have been turned over to the National Task Force on Literacy Education.

The drive was inspired by student Rochanté Alleyne and developed with the support of Year Head, Collette Applewhaite.

Driven by the goal of enhancing literacy resources in the community, the students rallied peers, teachers, and families to contribute educational materials.

The collected materials were formally presented to Chairman of the National Task Force on Literacy Education, Dr Sylvia Henry on Thursday at a ceremony attended by the ‘Martindale’s Angels’ of the fourth form, Applewhaite, and principal Tanya Harding.

The donation will support the task force’s ongoing efforts to foster literacy education across the island.

Applewhaite said this initiative not only highlights the students’ commitment to giving back to their community but also underscores the importance of literacy education in shaping a brighter future.

Harding praised the students’ dedication, noting that the Literacy Drive reflects the school’s philanthropic spirit and commitment to making a meaningful impact on the community.

Dr Henry expressed gratitude for the donation, emphasising its significance in providing children with access to educational resources. She said it was also meaningful that students were as much supporters of the task force’s mission as those whose literacy life will be enriched by peer-driven efforts such as this.
