Despite going down in the final match of the series to The Villages USA polo club, Barbados still emerged victorious in the Barbados Polo Club’s international tour.

Playing in the third and final game of the tour on Saturday evening at the Holders Hill polo field, USA ended the series on a winning note by defeating Barbados 8-6.

Barbados went into the final game leading the three-match series 2-0 and would have had high hopes of a clean sweep.

The first chukka saw Barbados and the USA locked at 2-2. Teddy Williams who had a fall early in the match, recovered to score a goal for the home side, with Pablo Crespin, who eventually replaced him also getting on the scoresheet.

USA’s two goals came from the mallets of Lord Lyall and Nick Johnson.

In the second chukka, Barbados could not add to their goal tally as they struggled to deal with the aggressiveness of the USA.

Meanwhile, the visitors scored two more goals to take a 4-2 lead heading into the half.

The same script continued into the third chukka with Barbados again going scoreless while the USA continued their dominance by adding two more goals to increase their lead to 6-2.

However, in the fourth and final chukka, Barbados came out with a sense of urgency, scoring two quick goals to reduce the deficit to two (6-4) and give hope of an improbable comeback.

That hope was soon lost, though, as the USA added two more to take the score to 8-4. Two late goals were added by Barbados, but it was a little too late to complete the full sweep of the series.

A complete team effort was seen from the USA as three goals came from the mallet of Lyall while two each went through the posts from Johnson and Duncan Hotson.

For Barbados, Crespin led all scorers with four goals with Wayne Archer and Teddy Williams being the other goal scorers. (AC)
