It was a stellar production for which Trident 10 TV should take a bow. At 7:30 p.m. on National Heroes Day, the biggest virtual entertainment event since the public health restrictions were implemented was broadcast to thousands.

A line-up of over 100 sons and daughters of Barbados took time and gave off their talents as a show of appreciation to those working on the frontline during this COVID-19 pandemic. Acts ranged in age and genre. There was gospel, reggae, ballads and of course, soca from performers aged eight years to over 70.

Most of the major arts were represented. These were song, dance, instrumentals, cooking, comedy, pageantry and fine art by Fine art by Shanika Grimes. Even Formula One driver Zane Maloney was involved. So was Miss Universe Barbados Hillary-Ann Williams.

It was a potpourri of over four hours of entertainment. The production was enhanced with some serious messages, heartfelt interviews and informative commercials. Hosts for the night, Operations Director of Trident Kimtara Clarke and personality Jamal Slocombe did an excellent job.

There were a few moments and messages worthy of mentioning. The only living National Hero Sir Garfield Sobers gave a special message.

“It is wonderful to have this opportunity to speak to the camera about what is going on in Barbados at the present moment which is not very easy… I have to say thanks to all the doctors, nurses and essential workers who are putting themselves at risk daily to serve us. Today, our Heroes Day, I consider all of them our heroes.”

Minister of Culture John King endorsed the production.

“Some of the island’s best talent will be on show and I know it will brighten your day. Enjoy it to the max. However, we have heroes on the frontline who are fighting against the coronavirus for whom this production has been put together. Let us all play our part as they stay on the job for us.”

Barbados’ lone Olympics medallist, Obadele Thompson, urged countrymen to tap into their “inner hero”.

“As we reflect on our heroes during these tough times, I want you to think about how you too can make a difference. Now is the time to summon your inner hero, where you are and with what you have and exercise your faith…” the Olympian said.

Dr The Most Honourable Anthony Gabby Carter said the deadly virus had hit home since he had lost a relative to it. The cultural ambassador said his son’s mother, who is a nurse, is currently infected. Dr Stedson RPB Wiltshire urged Bajans to spread love, not COVID-19. He urged them to “mask up” and later sang Issues Of The Day.

During his interview, a Bajan living in New York, Charles, spoke about the COVID-19 crisis in the Big Apple and gave this advice.

“Make sure you are following the directions. You [must] have trust and faith. Make sure you are protecting yourself. There is a lot of misinformation going around. Don’t look for any short cuts. Stay home and do what you have to do.”

Ryan Lewis, who is a nursing officer, saluted his fellow health care workers and thanked Barbadians for complying with the public health guidelines. He stressed the importance of mental health during this period.

Anglican Bishop Rev Michael Maxwell said: “We are winning this battle against coronavirus, Barbados, as our God continues to be our guide, as He continues to inspire our frontline workers with their hearts of love in their great hour of service to our nation. Let us continue to put our faith in God…”

Words of encouragement and comfort from the Good Book also came from Rev Erma Ambrose of St Paul’s, Pastor John Yarde and Pastor Derek Ward.

Their words were reinforced by gospel renditions from Larix, Neesha Woodz, Sherry-Ann Maughn, Jude Clarke, Trinity Clarke and Kellie Cadogan.

Performing artistes included Dynamo, Janine White, Ishaka McNeil, Dancin’ Africa, and BCC Pan Ensemble. Chef Dane Sadler and daughter Taiema said “thank you” by preparing a tuna salad.

Some popular entertainers involved were Tamara Marshall, Aja, Toni Norville, Philip 7, Buggy Nhakente, Ayana John, Betty B, Wesu, Barry Chandler, Alix Cage, Wesley Morris, David Kirton, Showtime, Peach Bless, Adaeze, Rhea Garnes, SugarRhe, Kareesha Clarke, Sirrah, Gozzy, Hashim Durant, Classic Silhouettes, Krisirie, Clay Haynes, Peter Cox, Jai Simone, Jacob Layson and Amber Orano.

Big name soca artistes played their part as well with some even singing other genres of music. On show were Rupee, Alison Hinds, Hypasounds, Mikey, Peter Ram, Classic, Faith, Walkes, TC, Chrystal, Donella, Blood, Nikita, Biggie Irie, Marvay, Apache, Shaquille, Joaquin, King Bubba FM, Rhea Layne, Bit Bit and Shontae.

The patriotic show closed with winning Sweet Soca competition song Home Sweet Home by Edwin. The song, which was produced in 2016 when the island celebrated 50 years of Independence, was sung by the artiste accompanied by footage of scenes across Barbados. (IMC)
