CricketSports Proteas beat India in first ODI by Barbados Today 19/01/2022 written by Barbados Today Updated by Stefon Jordan 19/01/2022 3 min read A+A- Reset Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 122 Centuries from Rassie van der Dussen and Temba Bavuma helped South Africa ease to a 31-run win and pick up 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series in Paarl today. The pair made 204 for the fourth wicket and helped the hosts post 297. There were half-centuries for Shikhar Dhawan and Virat Kohli in the chase but India eventually ran out of steam, despite Shardul Thakur’s maiden ODI half-century. South Africa were 68 for 3 at one stage when van der Dussen joined Bavuma at the crease. India were on top and were looking to tighten the screws with R Ashwin in good rhythm. Janneman Malan looked all at sea against Jasprit Bumrah while Quinton de Kock struggled his way to 27 off 41. Aiden Markram was run out for 3 to give India an early upper hand. On the day, van der Dussen established himself as the enforcer and allowed Bavuma to play his game. Early in the innings, van der Dussen was scratchy at best. He poked and missed, and somehow also managed to keep Ashwin at bay. That van der Dussen was able to get going was also largely due to Yuzvendra Chahal’s inability to contain on a track with some help for the spinners. Van der Dussen swept and reverse swept his way to a brisk start and that meant India were forced on the defensive. As Bavuma built the innings, van der Dussen commanded the stage. He was dropped by Pant off Ashwin as the carrom ball took the edge and the ‘keeper failed to grab on. He was once again dropped in the 45th over – this time by Kohli – as India were guilty of being sluggish on the field and letting things meander. Between the two drops, van der Dussen made 75 and at a brisk rate to ensure South Africa were able to cruise at a comfortable pace. Bavuma got to the century first – off 133 balls – in the 45th over while van der Dussen got the landmark in the 48th, off 83 balls. South Africa made 51 in the last five to ensure India were pushed on the backfoot at the innings break. In the chase, despite losing KL Rahul early, India threatened to take the game away from the hosts. Shikhar Dhawan made 79 while Kohli got 60 and the pair put on 92 for the second wicket. Dhawan was the aggressor and helped India cross 50 in the ninth over. He got his fifty off 51 deliveries while Kohli also made a positive start after striking his second ball for four. India were 104 for 1 in 20 overs and looking to push on with the asking rate pretty much in control. Kohli strokes his half-century off 60 balls but last just three more deliveries post that as India were once again forced into another rebuilding phase. Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant and Venkatesh Iyer fell in quick succession as India went from 138 for 1 to 188 for 6. That period of play was enough to ensure a smooth win for the hosts despite Shardul Thakur smashing 50 not out off 43 in the end.
