Barbados Under-19 girls were defeated by Trinidad and Tobago Under-19s by seven wickets in their second match of the CWI Women’s U19 Rising Stars T20 Championship, played at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Trinidad and Tobago today.

The host nation won the toss and inserted the Bajan girls. Barbados fared better with the bat than in their first game against Guyana, managing to post a total of 113 for 2 wickets in their 20 overs. In response, Trinidad and Tobago reached 115 for 3 in 17.1 overs.

Top-scoring for Barbados was number 4 batter Asabi Callender who made an unbeaten 34 off 43 balls, inclusive of three boundaries and a six. Captain and opening batter Trishan Holder chipped in with a run-a-ball 32 before she was run out through some smart fielding by Maria La Foucade. Holder counted four fours and a six in her breezy knock. Opener Zaliya Campbell batted through the innings for a sedate 45-ball 27. The solitary wicket-taker for Trinidad and Tobago was Shalini Samaroo with 1 for 15 in her four overs.

When Trinidad and Tobago batted, they were in early trouble at 18 for 2 and then 48 for 3. But a blistering half-century from the number three batter Djenaba Joseph got the hosts safely to their target. Joseph made 56 in 33 balls with nine boundaries. She got solid if unspectacular support from Aniaya Roberts who chipped in with 15 from 29 balls.

The momentum in the game shifted after Barbados’ captain and wicketkeeper Holder inexplicably decided to have a bowl. Her one over went for 18 runs inclusive of two no-balls and two wides. This ignited the Trinidad and Tobago batting effort that had been flagging somewhat. Barbados once again conceded too many extras, gifting Trinidad and Tobago 18 runs to their tally.

Bowling for Barbados, medium-pacer Krisanne Howell took 1 for 18 in her four overs, Naijanni Cumberbatch had 1 for 20 in her four and Erin Deane claimed 1 for 25 in 3.1 overs with her off-spin. Player of the match was Roberts.

Thursday is a rest day and Barbados take on the USA on Friday at the same venue at 10 a.m.
