Bermuda captain Nahki Wells notched his eighth goal of the campaign for Bristol City, but Stoke City came from behind to win 2-1 and move above the Robins in the English Championship on Saturday when many matches across the country were postponed because of frozen pitches.

After a tepid opening at Ashton Gate, Andreas Weimann hit the inside of the post for the hosts following a delicate flick from Wells over the defence.

Wells, 32, put City ahead from close range on 33 minutes, turning in Cameron Pring’s low cross following an excellent run to the left byline.

Stoke goalkeeper Jack Bonham had earlier had to react quickly to keep out Wells, whose goal was his first in two months.

Manchester City loanee Liam Delap levelled for Stoke in first-half stoppage time before Jacob Brown pounced on a defensive mix-up to put the visitors ahead after the break.

Victory enabled Stoke to move up to 17th in the table, while Bristol City drop to 18th.

“We’ve dropped 17 points from winning positions and that’s something we need to improve on,” Bristol City manager Ngtel Pearson said

Elsewhere in the second tier, experienced Curacao midfielder Leandro Bacuna was ushered straight into the Watford side by manager Slaven Bilic, having only arrived as a free-agent signing three days earlier.

Bacuna helped the visitors temporarily move into third place with a 2-0 win at bottom club Huddersfield Town thanks to a second-half brace from Brazilian Joao Pedro.

Bacuna, 31, has signed until the end of the season after leaving division rivals, Cardiff City in July.

Ryan Inniss, who is eligible to play for Trinidad & Tobago as his father was born there, went from hero to villain when Charlton Athletic let slip an early lead to lose 2-1 against Bristol Rovers at The Valley in League 1.

Charlton fully merited their 20th-minute lead, Inniss, 27, heading home a corner from Scott Fraser, but Rovers striker John Marquis turned the contest around after his introduction in the 55th minute.

Marquis took only six minutes to get on the score sheet, dispossessing Inniss, who was caught napping on the edge of his own penalty area, and claimed his second in the 72nd minute after cutting out a pass forward from Inniss, extending Charlton’s winless league sequence to six matches.

Rovers moved up to ninth, extending their unbeaten run in League 1 to five matches. (CMC)
