Lego piece showcases National Heroes

The Lego Club of Barbados has done it again. A dozen of its members, with assistance from their parents, have built a map of Barbados featuring the island’s 11 national heroes, all from Lego pieces.

Made from more than 36,200 Lego bricks, the mosaic stands at approximately 8 feet by 7 feet. It is to be framed and presented to the Government in the coming days, just in time for National Heroes Day.

The first project by the club, which was started towards the end of 2018, was the creation of the Barbados Coat of Arms built from Legos, which was done for Independence Day last year, using some 18,000 lego pieces. That is hanging in the Parliament building.

Dave Rafikh told Barbados TODAY that it was following that project that Prime Minister Mia Mottley threw out a challenge for the club to do another.

He said that by December they came up with the idea to do something for National Heroes Day and they wanted it to be bigger than the approximately 4 feet by 5 feet Coat of Arms.

“It was a unanimous decision to do the Barbados map with the 11 national heroes,” he said.

“The kids of the club and the parents worked tirelessly to get this project up and running and we want to deliver it for April 28, National Heroes Day,” he said.

Rafikh said about 12 children in total worked on the project only on weekends, from the beginning of March.

Trey Licorish, 15, is one of the club members who worked on the project. He told Barbados TODAY he was satisfied with the outcome, declaring “I feel it is a job well done”. (MM)
