Local NewsNews Barbadians urged to protect their health by Barbados Today 03/09/2023 written by Barbados Today Updated by Desmond Brown 03/09/2023 2 min read A+A- Reset Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 330 Lamenting the significant numbers within the local population that suffer from non-communicable diseases (NCDs), Minister of People’s Empowerment Kirk Humphrey is urging Barbadians to take the necessary steps towards protecting their health. One of the first persons to visit the booths of almost 40 exhibitors on display at the two-day Healthy Living Expo at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre on Saturday afternoon, he told the media that while the island has an ageing population, it is also an unhealthy one. “The level of NCDs is disproportionate when compared to other countries. So I think it’s important that we start having a conversation about not only exercise but about the things that we put into our bodies, the foods that we eat, the drinks we consume, and so on,” he said. Humphrey pointed out that while people often made assumptions about those who are overweight having health issues, many persons appearing to be healthy were not, particularly within the Black community. He insisted, therefore, that persons must be conscious of their numbers regarding blood pressure and sugar. Pledging his ministry’s continued support of the event, he urged Barbadians to attend in numbers to be able to see the options available for healthy foods, diets and exercise programmes. Gail Reeves of Rotary Club of Barbados West, one of the expo’s sponsors, also highlighted the need to influence the eating habits of children towards healthier food choices. Reflecting on her own health scare five years ago, which led her on a journey of shedding several pounds, organiser Sharon Skeete said she developed the expo with the intention of educating persons of what healthier options are available on the island. “This is just a small part of Barbados coming out to say ‘we are joining hands to see a healthier Barbados. We chose the slogan ‘Get Healthy Barbados’ because it is everyone’s responsibility where this country goes in terms of its health,” she said while urging persons to make the mental commitment to improve the island’s well-being. She said that the event will also feature several interactive sessions for patrons, including fitness demos, a Barbados Food and Rum pop-up and discussions with 15 professionals on different health and wellness topics. “Exhibitors have a well-planned day for you and they have lots of prizes and surprises at the booths, so come on down,” she urged.
