Share FacebookTwitterLinkedinWhatsappEmail 448 The Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) will next Monday hear the case of former Insurance Corporation of Barbados (ICBL) executive Alex Tasker who is making another bid for special leave to appeal his extradition. In July this year, the Trinidad-headquartered CCJ, Barbados’ highest appellate court, rejected Tasker’s application for special leave to challenge the decision of the Court of Appeal. That court had dismissed his attempt to appeal the order for him to surrender to authorities in the United States where he is wanted on money laundering and money laundering conspiracy charges. The CCJ said it will consider Tasker’s application to reopen his application for special leave, and if it is reopened, whether his appeal should be allowed. The panel will hear the matter in the Supreme Court Complex here as the CCJ will have an itinerant sitting and a series of outreach activities including the CCJ Academy for Law 7th Biennial Conference which begins next Monday. It will be the court’s second itinerant sitting in Barbados. The first was the Shanique Myrie case in 2013. Fields was sentenced in 2020 to 22 years in prison for the February 18, 2010 fatal shooting of Michael Dear. But after several factors were taken into consideration, including the six years he spent on remand, he was left with 16 years to serve at Dodds. Fields has appealed the conviction and sentence.
