High quality submissions in NCSA interschool competition

Holy Innocents Primary School and Graydon Sealy Secondary School are the winners of the inaugural National Council on Substance Abuse (NCSA) Learn Well, Play Well Interschool Creative Competition.

Frederick Smith Secondary School and Deighton were second and third, respectively, in the secondary school category. Among the primary school competitors, Belmont Primary was second, followed by St Catherine’s Primary, Trinity Academy, Hillaby Turners Hall and Wilkie Cumberbatch.

Participants of the interschool competition were encouraged to select a prominent area of their school to mount a display to promote healthy alternatives to drug use and demonstrate a commitment to the healthy development of children. Registered schools received an NCSA display starter pack, the contents of which were to be included in the final display to be eligible for the school prize.

Substance Abuse Prevention Officer at NCSA, Wendy Greenidge, who organised the competition, said although the number of schools participating in the inaugural event was moderate, the quality of the displays was outstanding.

Speaking at the awards ceremony on Thursday, she said schools utilised a variety of media to stimulate the senses of the onlooker as they signed pledges, played games and unravelled the intricacies of the artwork on display.

NCSA Manager Betty Hunte applauded the work which she said was a reflection of the talent that youth possess and the dedication of both students and teachers. She cautioned the children to be mindful of what they consume on social media and advised them to seek factual information from reliable sources.

The NCSA plans to host the competition again next year.
