Royal Bank of Canada has donated US$25 000 (BDS$50 000) each to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) and School House for Special Needs Inc.

The exercise was part of Charity Day for the Kids, launched globally by RBC Capital Markets, which primarily supports children and youth through charity partners in communities throughout the world.

On the tenth anniversary of this event on Tuesday, RBC Capital Markets employees in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Spain, the Netherlands, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Australia, and in the Caribbean – The Bahamas and Barbados – hosted similar events to celebrate the bank’s culture of giving and commitment to helping communities prosper.

Yasmin Vahakis, founder and principal of School House for Special Needs, thanked the bank for its donation, notion that it is the third year it has been the recipient of this “most very generous gift”.

“We intend to put the money towards a new class that we are building for our infants. They are now entering the world of special education, so we will be working on developing their early reading and numeracy skills,” Vahakis said.

“In addition to that, we will be using some of the money towards scholarships for our vulnerable students who come from families who are really struggling in Barbados.”

The US$25 000 (BDS$50 000) for the QEH will benefit the Pediatric Department.

Philanthropy Officer in that department, Gay Howell, thanked RBC for the donation on behalf of the board and management of the hospital.
