The all-clear has been given and the hurricane warning has been discontinued for Barbados as a dangerous Category 4 Hurricane Beryl moves away from the island.

The hurricane warning was called off at 2 p.m. and Home Affairs Minister Wilfred Abrahams shortly after informed residents that they were free to leave home, though he still urged caution.

He also advised Barbadians to avoid Highway 7 as the South Coast has been significantly impacted by the sea surge and some areas are impassable.

Although the hurricane warning has been discontinued, the Barbados Meteorological Services said strong winds of 28 to 40 mph with higher gusts will continue to affect the island this afternoon. A wind advisory is therefore in effect until 6 p.m.

“The public may expect tumbling and rolling of unsecured objects (e.g. inflatable structures, tents and garbage cans),” the BMS warned.
