The annual Rotary Club of Barbados West Diamonds International Charity Golf Classic, which made a successful return in 2023 after a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, is set to continue this year on October 6th 2024. The tournament, now in its 20th year, has raised over $2.6 million to support various charitable causes in Barbados and the region.
Greg Hazzard, president of the Rotary Club of Barbados West, provided an overview of the club’s charitable initiatives. He mentioned the club’s involvement in disaster relief, education, health, and community development projects. Hazzard emphasised the importance of the golf tournament as a fundraising event that enables the club to continue its impactful work.
Proceeds from the tournament have been used to fund initiatives such as the refurbishment of the Paediatric Ward at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH), the enhancement of the Medical Intensive Care Unit, providing free hearing tests and treatment to primary school children, and establishing a scholarship fund for students facing financial challenges. These were but a few of the things mentioned during the media conference.
Horace Cobham, past president, current vice president of the Rotary Club of Barbados West, and the Classic’s current committee chairman also emphasised the tournament’s significance as a platform to support various charitable causes. He highlighted the club’s commitment to making a positive impact on the community and expressed gratitude to Diamonds International for their long-standing support as title sponsors.
Jacob Hassid, managing director of Diamonds International, expressed the company’s pride in supporting the Rotary Club and the annual golf tournament. He highlighted the company’s commitment to corporate social responsibility and their belief in the positive impact of community involvement. Hassid also highlighted the importance of corporate Barbados and their participation over the years in support of the charity. He also mentioned that other charities have been born out of the event and the camaraderie and socialisation.
