As the nation’s 58th Independence Anniversary approaches, the government has announced that Barbados is set to come alive with a lineup of events in celebration of its heritage, culture, and unity.
During a press conference on Saturday, Minister of Home Affairs and Information, Wilfred Abrahams shared the complete schedule, inviting all Barbadians to participate in the month’s activities, which he described as a tribute to the spirit and resilience of the island.
“It’s that time of year when we come together as one people,” Minister Abrahams said.
“This month isn’t just about celebrating Independence Day; it’s about celebrating who we are. From the arts to our military traditions, we’ll be showcasing the best of Barbados.”
The festivities include activities from cultural showcases and community gatherings to moments of reflection and gratitude.
Following the Remembrance Day Parade on November 10, the National Independence Festival of Creative Arts (NIFCA) will continue to highlight Barbadian talent, with the NIFCA Film Screenings on November 15 and the Visual Arts Exhibition Grand Opening and Spirit of the Nation Show on November 16.
“These events bring out the heart of Barbados,” Abrahams continued. “It’s a chance for us to see and appreciate the diversity of our talents and the dedication of our communities.”
In addition to cultural events, this year’s schedule includes opportunities for citizens to connect with their history as on November 23, the public is being invited to the Genealogy Marketplace at the Archives Department where they will be given a chance to tour the facility and explore the heritage. That same day, St Ann’s Fort will host an expanded Armory Tour featuring military exhibits and displays from the protective services.
The tour will be led by the Barbados Defense Force with Chief of Staff Brigadier Carlos Lovell sharing that, “[It] will give Barbadians a chance to see our military history up close.”
“We are also excited to showcase the dedication of our servicemen and women. This is a way for the public to see how much we value the heritage and protection of our nation.”
The National Service of Thanksgiving will be held on November 24, providing a non-denominational service where Barbadians of all faiths can come together in gratitude and reflection at the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium. This will be followed on November 28 by the Independence Concert and the opening of the Marcus Garvey Amphitheatre in Queen’s Park, a new space dedicated to the arts and named in honour of the Pan-Africanist leader.
The pinnacle of celebrations arrives on Independence Day, November 30, beginning with the grand Independence/Republic Day Parade at Kensington Oval, which will feature the highly anticipated presentation of Leadership Badges and National Honours.
The parade will proceed through Bridgetown, followed by the Toast of the Nation opposite the Parliament Building and State House. Later that evening, the Independence activities will culminate with the Prime Minister’s Cup Final at Kensington Oval.
Sharing insights on the military aspect of the Independence Day activity, the Chief of Staff said, “This year’s parade will be exciting. It will be packed with a number of events which will help to promote our patriotism.”
“It will also help to educate Barbadians as to the contribution that Barbados has made, not only in the region, but also around the world,” he said.
He revealed that during the November 30 event, some 885 troops will be on parade.
In terms of the presentation of badges, Lovell said, “We’ll have over 200 head boys and head girls who will receive the Prime Minister’s Leadership Badge, presented by the Prime Minister, the President, the Chief Justice, and other dignitaries from across Barbados.”
Minister Abrahams wrapped up the announcements by encouraging all Barbadians to join in the celebration of national pride.
He further called for the public, including students, to wear national colours every Friday leading up to Independence Day. (SM)
