The Villages at Coverley came alive on Saturday as the Paws for Health event hosted by Action for Animals Barbados turned the playing field and pavilion into a lively hub celebrating World Animal Day.

From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the area became a space of purpose and joy, blending veterinary care, education and advocacy with a shared love for animals. Pet owners arrived slowly throughout the morning – some carrying excited puppies, others guiding seasoned family pets to their annual check-ups – all drawn by the promise of free health services, fun activities and the chance to learn more about responsible pet ownership.

According to Dr Michelle Bell from Central Veterinary Clinic, the event was designed to make essential services more accessible to the community.

“Not everyone can easily access a vet, so this event helps bridge that gap,” she explained. “We’re giving people the opportunity to get their dogs examined, vaccinated and to ask questions; but more importantly, we are helping them understand what real, long-term care looks like.”

Throughout the day, the veterinary team provided free health checks and vaccinations for puppies, as well as nail trimming and general consultations.

Pet owners also received practical advice on nutrition, parasite prevention and early detection of illnesses such as parvovirus, one of the most dangerous yet preventable diseases affecting local dogs.

But Paws for Health was about more than just medical care. It was a celebration of the affectionate bond between humans and their pets, and of the community spirit that arises when compassion becomes a shared purpose.

Gail Hunte, one of the organizers representing Action for Animals Barbados, said the annual event is part of a broader movement to promote responsible pet ownership.

“It is about more than check-ups and vaccinations. Rather, it is about changing mindsets and helping owners see their pets as part of the family, deserving of care, structure and love. We want to take this message across the island and make responsible pet ownership the norm, not the exception.”

Beyond the main activities, volunteers shared information on adoption, licensing and community outreach programs, giving owners the tools they need to care for their pets and helping reduce the number of strays and neglected animals in Barbados.

The event’s success highlighted how much Barbadians love their animals. Many attendees said they were grateful for the opportunity to get free check-ups and to learn more about keeping their pets healthy. For others, it was simply a chance to enjoy a sunny Saturday surrounded by dogs, laughter and good energy.

As the day wound down and tired pups rested in the shade, the sense of accomplishment was clear. Paws for Health had achieved more than providing vaccinations but it had fostered awareness and reminded the community that the health of our animals reflects the care and heart of the people around them.
