A steel bender was granted $500 bail when he appeared in a Bridgetown court today on several drug charges.
Now the surety who posted bail for Wayne Davidon Harewood, of Ducans, St Philip must ensure that he appears in court on all future dates. That next appearance is scheduled for the District ‘C’ Magistrates’ Court on September 16.
Harewood, is accused of possession of cannabis, having a trafficable quantity of the illegal drug, possession with intent to supply and cultivation. The offences are alleged to have occurred on April 21.
No plea was taken after the 51-year-old’s attorney-at-law Arthur Holder objected to the prosecutor’s submission for the matter to be dealt with summarily in the District ‘A’ Traffic Court.
“Such an elective can not be given at this time,” Holder said as he raised the issue of jurisdiction. “That can only be given on a Saturday when a magistrate has island-wide jurisdiction.”
Holder added: The CJ’s (Chief Justice) Practice Direction speaks only to Saturday. So the Chief Justice has to change it. The Chief Justice has to give a new Practice Direction . . . . the CJ needs to remedy that ASAP.”
