National Independence Service set for November 24

Barbadians are being urged to come out to this year’s National Independence Service, set for Sunday, November 24 at 10 a.m. at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.

Senator Patricia Parris, a member of the National Organising Committee, said at a press conference on Thursday morning that the service will be held under the theme, Stronger Together with Peace, Love and Unity and Barbadians should join the celebration.

“It is open to the public. You do not have to have a ticket to attend this service, it is for all. We will have all the necessary arrangements in place for parking, the road will be free flowing and you will be welcomed warmly when you get to the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex,” she said.

Officiant Dr Winston Clarke is eagerly anticipating the service which will feature a sermon by Anglican Bishop Michael Maxwell and the participation of multiple faiths.

“We are anticipating a bumper crowd and we are soliciting the support of all Barbadians,” Clarke said. “We are asking you to turn out in your numbers, let us celebrate, let us give God thanks for having brought us through another year. Let us come together as a people in keeping with the theme which speaks to being together and expounding the virtues of peace.”

Music will be a key feature of the service and the Barbados Police Service Band will lead worship with a 70-member choir.

Assistant Director of Music Anderson Whitehall said the band will engage the congregation in a vibrant pre-worship session and talented soloists will perform gospel favourites.

There will also be greetings and congratulatory messages from the diaspora and religious leaders from the Muslim, Jewish and Bahai faiths.
