Tributes in song to Bob Marley

The life and legacy of reggae music icon Bob Marley was celebrated on the eve of what would have been his 78th birthday. On Sunday night, local artiste Buggy Nhakente and his backing band One Draw paid homage to the internationally acclaimed singer with a concert called Talking Blues. The show, which took place at The Cove Night Club, in St. Lawrence Gap, attracted a multigenerational audience. Deejay music provided a welcome prelude before the featured acts hit the stage around 10:30 p.m. Even the light showers could not dampen the mood of the crowd gathered for the musical showcase. 

Buggy’s almost two-hour set included some of Marley’s mega hits like Satisfy My Soul, Lively Up Yourself, Is This Love and Thanks and Praises. However, the night was not solely about the reggae pioneer as the singer pulled from his own repertoire to satisfy the audience. His session included fan favourites including Best Friend, I See Dem, Hold Me Close, Can’t Tek We Star and Just a Man. The lead vocalist was ably assisted on background vocals by the sweet singing duo of Lisa and Rochelle Griffith.

There were several other local performers who added to the package. Among the team was Leigh Phillips, who is more known for a neo-soul feel. She highlighted her range as an artiste in this appearance. The tone of her voice was beautiful in her rendition of Turn Your Lights Down Low, and she also did justice to Pimper’s Paradise. Peach Bless also represented the ladies, delivering an energetic performance of Could You Be Loved and Roots, her collaboration with Buggy.

Sonny Meraki is an excellent performer, and he did not disappoint with his rendition of No Woman No Cry and his original track Beautiful Woman. Alberto Olton was boundless energy from the time he hit the stage and his energy level did not wane as he thrilled the crowd with Jammin and Rock with Me. It was difficult to take your eyes off of him, as he was a show all by himself. He got the audience revved up when he placed the guitar on the ground and strummed away as though it was a keyboard. Even after Buggy’s extensive performance, which included some of his new material, the crowd still wanted more and the calls “We want more” reverberated through the venue. He obliged and teased them with more of his sweet music. 

The party continued well after his departure with DJ Bard keeping the vibe of the party nice.
